LECTURE

(8 hrs. AGD Oral Surgery Lecture Credit – subject code 310)

Oral Surgery for the General Dentist: Surgical Extractions and Related Procedures

Many patients need extractions and other surgery, but it can become harder than they thought it would be.  Dr. Koerner will help them become more proficient and confident with difficult extractions and other surgery common to general practice. This course reviews the best techniques and instruments to do these surgeries more easily and quickly while conserving bone. It is a requirement for success with implants and more aesthetic bridges.  It helps avoid/manage common complications and teaches alveoplasty for less postoperative pain with dentures. One section includes the essentials of moderate third molar removal designed mainly for dentists in community health and corrections.  In the process, it covers incisions, flaps, sectioning roots, root tip removal, faster sutures, and other topics.

Objectives:

Because of this course, the participants will:

  1. Understand how to perform exodonia faster and more predictably.
  2. Be better at selecting patients within their comfort zone.
  3. Have greater confidence smoothing bone after multiple extractions.
  4. Have more knowledge about managing partially erupted and symptomatic third molars.
  5. Be clearer on how to mitigate problems and complications with minor dentoalveolar surgery.

      SATURDAY, MARCH 7, 2026

      PARTICIPATION/HANDS-ON

      Objectives for hands-on:

Because of working on models, participants will have greater dexterity and clinical ability to:

      1. Section maxillary and mandibular molars prior to removing the individual roots separately.
      2. Use the 701 bur to create a trough in root periodontal ligament spaces (PDLs) up to ¾ of the root length prior to using a Luxator “to depth” in the trough.
      3. Use a bur to trough around root tips prior to using selected hand instruments to remove root tips.
      4. Correctly perform “incision and drain” of an infection.
      5. Excise a small lesion and submit for biopsy.
      6. Use a Hedstrom file in a broken root near the maxillary sinus to prevent losing it in the sinus.

If you attend the both days, you will receive 16 hrs. AGD Oral Surgery (subject code 310) Participation Credit.  Additional 16 hours of participation credit may be earned by presenting a clinical homework assignment after the course and presenting in September of 2026.  There is an additional fee of $500 if you are not in the IAGD Masterack).
